PURPOSE AND SCOPE
When establishing a relationship between the concepts of Islam and civilization, it is clear that it is necessary to emphasize the founding and guiding values of the Islamic religion. One of the characteristics of Islam is that it transforms the people and societies that adopt it and reveals decisive common values, some of which were not present in them before. Therefore, when Islamic civilization is mentioned, it is generally meant all the material and spiritual achievements that Muslim people have demonstrated while being Muslim.” (Tahsin Görgün, “Medeniyet” DİA, 28/301) Like every civilization, Islamic civilization also inherited accumulations outside of itself when it emerged on the stage of history, but it managed to produce its own original forms in every field in a short time.
This success of Islamic civilization is clearly evident in the works, theories, concepts and institutions it has put forward. It can be said that these successes, which meet the essential needs of man, are aimed at ensuring his individual and social competence by taking into account his rational, voluntary and emotional aspects.
When we look at the values that make us feel deeply in the Islamic civilization, many concepts such as right, truth, science, morality, virtue, justice, happiness, charity, etc. have been kneaded within this civilization and gained a meaning. Accordingly, in Muslim societies original works have been produced in many fields such as science, philosophy, art, architecture, craft, etc., which have differences within themselves.
When we look at the events that are happening today, we see that the fundamental virtue/value that people first bring to the agenda is justice. Injustices seen in many parts of the world are actually related to the absence of justice. So that justice is determined as the first and fundamental goal sought everywhere. From individual life to economic activity, from law to social life, justice has become a virtue sought and longed for. Just as justice is frequently mentioned in the Quran and the Sunnah, the fundamental sources of Islam, in the sciences produced in the Islamic geography, such as the science of hadith, justice has been considered as one of the most important conditions that a narrator must have in order for his narrations to be accepted and has been seen as a spiritual and moral characteristic that ensures that he stays away from all behaviors that humiliate the narrator. Again, in the science of fiqh, it has been considered as a characteristic of someone who avoids major sins, fulfills obligatory duties, and whose good behaviors outweigh the bad to be accepted as a witness. In Islamic philosophy, it is considered as an ontological concept and is thought to mean that every being receives its share from the "First Being" according to its rank during emanation (sudur); and in the science of ethics, it is considered as the fourth fundamental virtue, which includes wisdom, bravery and chastity.
Based on these thoughts, it was decided to organize the “Justice in the Context of Islamic Civilization; International Symposium” on 7-8 November 2024, by bringing together scholars in the field of Islamic Studies, hosted by Erciyes University Faculty of Theology and Kayseri University Faculty of Islamic Sciences.
The aim of the symposium is to bring together scientists who conduct research in the fields of Fundamental Islamic Sciences, Philosophy and Religious Sciences, Islamic History and Arts, and Turkish Islamic Thought History, and to evaluate how the concept of justice has been understood in the past and today from a critical perspective within the framework of original research theories and methods. Our hope is that the symposium will create a dynamic discussion environment, pave the way for brand new perspectives and suggestions, and contribute to the consideration of the past and the present, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern in a relationship of continuity.
We are very pleased to invite you to the Justice in the Context of Islamic Civilization; International Symposium. The symposium will be held face-to-face and online, and then the abstracts and full papers of the symposium proceedings will be published in an international publishing house.
Best regards…
